Abstract
Objectives: The study aimed to identify the difficulties of employing modern technologies in teaching social studies in cycle two schools and post-basic education in the Sultanate of Oman, as perceived by social studies teachers. It examined the relationship of these challenges with gender, academic qualifications, and educational stage. Methods: To achieve this research objective, a descriptive approach was employed, and a questionnaire was developed as the study tool. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of (583) male and female social studies teachers in the governorates of South Al Batinah and Muscat. One of the primary findings of the study revealed that, from the teachers' perspective, the level of challenges in implementing modern technologies in teaching social studies in secondary schools and post-basic education in the Sultanate of Oman was at an average level. Results: The results indicated that the most significant difficulties included the absence of necessary technical support services for teachers in integrating modern technologies into academic curricula, the inability of some families to provide devices for their children and cover the costs of internet services, and the substantial workload placed on teachers when transferring educational content to online platforms. Additionally, the results demonstrated that there were no statistically significant differences in the level of challenges related to employing modern technologies in teaching social studies among social studies teachers concerning all variables studied. Conclusions: Based on these results and their discussion, the study offers several recommendations. Among the most important is the allocation of sufficient budget resources to schools to enable them to provide the necessary equipment for implementing modern technologies in teaching social studies. Furthermore, it is recommended to enhance and adapt the content prepared for social studies to better support the effective integration of modern technologies in education.
