The Readability Level of Science Textbooks Used for Ninth-Grade Students in Jordan

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to measure the readability level of science textbooks (Physics, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Biology) used for ninth-grade students in Jordan. Methods: The study employed an analytical approach and constructed a Cloze test for six passages from the prescribed textbooks. It was administered to a sample of 280 male and female students randomly selected from ninth-grade students in schools in Al-Qwaismeh district in the capital, Amman. Results: The readability level of the Physics textbook was found to be frustrating; the readability levels of the Chemistry and Earth and Environmental Sciences textbooks were at an educational level, the readability level of the Life Sciences textbook was at an independent level. Conclusions: The study recommended there is a need to pay attention to the readability of science textbooks.
